Targeted Weed Control by an I.P.M.-Trained Crew
Winnipeg lawns spend the season fighting the same shortlist of weeds — dandelions in May, clover by July, creeping charlie under shade trees, thistle and plantain in the back lane. D&J’s weed control program is built around two well-timed blanket applications, unlimited spot visits, and selective herbicides that target the weeds without killing the grass underneath them.
What we treat — and what we leave alone
We use Par III and Trillion, both Health Canada approved selective broadleaf herbicides registered for residential lawn use. “Selective” is the word that matters: the spray kills broadleaf weeds and leaves grass blades alone, which is what makes blanket lawn applications possible in the first place. On a typical Winnipeg lawn that means real control over dandelion, white clover, black medic, plantain, chickweed, ground ivy (creeping charlie), thistle, and oxalis.
What it won’t touch is the grassy weeds — crabgrass, quackgrass, foxtail. Those behave like grass and need a different approach (mowing height, thicker turf, sometimes targeted spot work). If grassy weeds are your main complaint, mention it during the estimate so we can talk through what actually works.
I.P.M. trained, applied responsibly
D&J is I.P.M. (Integrated Pest Management) trained — the certification Manitoba requires of professional applicators. In practice that means we apply only when the weather, lawn condition, and weed pressure call for it, we don’t over-apply, and we follow the provincial label and re-entry rules to the letter. Pets and kids stay off the lawn until the spray has dried (a few hours, depending on weather), and after that the surface is safe for normal use. We’re also fully licensed in Manitoba, W.C.B. covered, and BBB A+ rated — the same credentials we’ve carried since the early years.
Timing — when blanket vs. spot wins
The two strongest blanket windows in Winnipeg are late May through mid-June and late August through mid-September. Spring catches dandelions when they’re actively growing and pushing flowers, and fall catches the perennial broadleaf weeds when they’re pulling sugars (and herbicide) down to the roots for winter. We avoid mid-summer blanket sprays during the hottest, driest stretches — the grass is already stressed, the weeds are partially dormant, and the spray is less effective. Between the two blankets, the seasonal package includes unlimited spot visits for the patches that pop back up.
Where weed control fits in a healthy lawn
Spray gets the weeds out. A thick lawn is what keeps them out. Heavy clay soil — which is most of Winnipeg — favours weeds with deep taproots like dandelion, because they punch through compaction where grass roots struggle. The long-term play on a weedy lawn is to pair weed control with fertilization and core aeration: kill the weeds, feed the grass, open the soil so roots can run, and the lawn closes the gaps the weeds left behind. That’s why our seasonal packages bundle weed control with fertilization rather than selling it as a one-off spray.
